17-DEC-2016: The Department of Statistics and Operations Research, Aligarh Muslim University today organised the Inaugural Function of VIII International Symposium on Statistics and Optimization which coincided with the XXXVI-Annual Convention of Indian Society for Probability and Statistics (ISPS) and Seminar on Statistical Inference, Sampling and Optimization Techniques and Related Areas (Under SAP-DRS-II).
Professor Taps Maiti, Michigan State University, USA graced the occasion as Chief Guest, while Dr Chae Lim, Seoul National University South Korea and Professor A M Mathai, former president of Indian Mathematical Society attended the programme as Guests of Honour. Professor Abdul Muneer, Dean, Faculty of Science presided over the function.
Delivering the keynote address, Professor Maiti mentioned the importance of Statistics research given in USA and encouraged the researchers in India to follow the path by addressing the current challenges of Data Science.
Meanwhile, Prof P R Reddy during his address highlighted the details of ISPS history, and installation of new awards, while underlining the new initiatives and plans to be taken up by ISPS.
Professor Abdul Muneer, Dean, Faculty of Science encouraged the students and teachers of the university to interact with the visiting delegates and increase their knowledge.
Earlier, welcoming the delegates, Prof Qazi Mazhar Ali, Chairman, Department of Statistics and Operations Research highlighted the achievements and history of the Department.
He pointed out that in the coming years; there will be intelligent machines like driver less vehicles and 3D printers that will change the whole society.
Prof Ali further said that these machines will manufacture things in a couple of hours with minimum human efforts.
More than 200 delegates from India and abroad attended the International Seminar, in which 40 invited talks will be deliberated and 200 research papers will be presented.
Professor Aquil Ahmad, Vice President, ISPS, conducted the programme and also proposed the vote of thanks.
On the occasion Prof A M Mathai, Prof K Srinivasa Rao and Prof A N Balakrishnan from Canada were conferred with the Professor C R Rao Life Time Achievement award, Distinguished Statistician Award and Fellow of ISPS Award respectively.
