23-DEC-2016: Professor Javed Alam, Department of Civil Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University has returned after participating in the 'Hydro-2016 International', 21st International Conference on Hydraulics, Water Resources and Coastal Engineering held at Pune, Maharashtra. He had presented a paper on 'Scour Depth Prediction at Bridge Abutments in Cohesive Bed Using Group Method of Data Handling' during the Conference.
During the paper presentation, Prof Alam pointed out that in connection with bridges, scour is the result of erosive action of flowing water excavating and carrying away sediment from the bed and banks of a stream due to interference of structures such as abutments and bridge piers on the flowing water.
He added that abutment scour is caused by vortex action that forms near the abutment when flood-plain flow converges with main channel flow.
Talking about scour modelling, Prof Alam said that it has extensively been done on sandy beds but studies on scouring action on cohesive beds are still limited. He also pointed out that there is a very limited availability of literature on local scour at bridge abutment.
He further said that recently, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a powerful tool in solving very complex problems and the results so produced are very impressive. "AI-based inductive modelling techniques are frequently used to model complex process due to their powerful and non-linear model structures and their increased capabilities to capture the cause and effect relationship of such complex processes," said Prof Alam.
Prof Alam's paper was well received and appreciated by delegates from different parts of the country and abroad.
Prof Alam received his education from the Aligarh Muslim University. His research areas include water resources, utilization of flyash in water resources sector and flood control. He has taught Hydrology, Dam Engineering and River Engineering.
Prof Alam is also a life member of Institution of Engineers (IE), Indian society of technical education (ISTE), Indian society of water resources (IWRS), Indian society of hydraulics (ISH). His numerous research papers have been published in journals of national and international repute.
