Professor Nizamuddin Khan delivers keynote address at Mayfair College, Moradabad
Aligarh, March 16: Professor Nizamuddin Khan associated with the Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University recently presented a paper and delivered a keynote address on ?Water Resource: Planning and Challenges? in an International Seminar cum Conference held at Mayfair College in Moradabad.
During the address, Prof Khan pointed out that since water is unevenly distributed, the change in water utilization pattern is leading to negative impact on society and natural environment.
He added that the accessibility and availability of fresh water for both drinking and sanitation are serious issues and challenges at global, national and local levels. ?Excess amount of withdrawal of underground water for agriculture purpose and manufacturing sector has resulted in depletion of underground water,? said Prof Khan adding that huge amount of water is wasted through river floods and unscientific methods of irrigation.
Prof Khan further pointed out that the seepage of canal and uncontrolled flooding of agricultural fields are responsible for water wastage and industrial effluents and polluted water from agriculture and domestic sewage are poising the surface water of rivers and lakes.
Prof Khan?s paper highlights that the availability of little water is not a very serious problem and a mitigated approach with consideration of natural ecology, socio- economic condition and political governance is the need of the hour.
Meanwhile, Dr Mumtaz Ahamad, Assistant Professor, Department Geography, AMU chaired a technical session in the conference in which he spoke on ?Water Resource: Management and Challenges.?
