23-MAR-2017: World TB Day celebrations start at JN Medical College
Aligarh, March 23: As part of the week long celebrations of World TB Day, the Pulmonology and ID Clinic of the Department of Paediatrics, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University have organised a free TB check up camp for children. In the camp, Professor Farzana K Baig, Chairperson, Department of Paediatrics and in-charge Pulmonology and ID Clinic along with her team members, conducted free health check ups of children and also distributed free of cost drugs to them.
Addressing the children and their guardians, Professor Baig said that if there is a regular occurrence of chest infection, severe cough, fever, night sweats, weakness, loss of appetite among children, then they should be investigated for Tuberculosis immediately. Referring to the children visiting the Pulmonology and ID Clinic for treatment of TB, she informed that in 2016, atleast 112 cases of pulmonary and 121 extra pulmonary tuberculosis out of 223 cases were reported in JNMC?s OPD. Meanwhile, in IPD 22 cases of pulmonary and 52 having extra pulmonary tuberculosis were reported.
Prof Baig also pointed out that Tuberculosis (TB) is among the top 10 causes of deaths among children worldwide and 210,000 children die of tuberculosis each year.
She further said that one of the important Sustainable Development Goals is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. ?The target of this Sustainable Development Goal is to bring epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases to an end,? said Prof Baig.
She said that in an effort to create awareness regarding TB, the Department of Pediatrics is running the Pulmonology and ID Clinic at Ward 17 of JNMC on every Wednesday.
Professor Tariq Mansoor, Principal, JNMC distributed prizes to the winners of the various competitions held during the World TB Day observations. Prof Kamran Afzal, Dr Zeba Zaka ur Rab, Dr Kashif Ali, Dr Ayesha Ahmad and Dr Uzma Firdaus from the Department of Paediatrics and Dr M K Sherwani and Prof Mazhar Abbas from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery were present on the occasion.
Prof Harris M Khan, Prof Zubair Ahmad, Prof Mohd Shamim, Prof M R Ajmal, Prof Rana Sherwani and Prof R S Channa from the Departments of Microbiology, T B and Respiratory Diseases, Pathology and Paediatric Surgery also graced the occasion with their presence. District T B Officer, Dr Bhaskar was also present.
The occasion also had the presence of junior and senior residents of the Department of Paediatrics.
Dr Thajfeer UM, Dr Mohd Raza, Dr Eman Naim, Dr Tanveer Ahmad, Dr Bragindra Singh Rajput, Dr Md Atif, Dr Mohd Aqib, Dr Zulkar Nain, Mr Shamil and Dr Shubham Upadhyay played an active role in the success of the event.
