14-MAY-2017: General Shah unveils INC foundation stone
Aligarh, May 14: Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) recently unveiled the foundation stone at the newly established Interdisciplinary Nanotechnology Centre (INC), AMU in presence of Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran), esteemed members of the Executive Council, Professor Alim Husain Naqvi, Professor Absar Ahmad (Founder-Director, INC), and other faculty members and AMU students.
After raising the curtain of the foundation stone, General Shah said that 'Nanotechnology is the Future' and he is sure INC, AMU will be able to provide brilliant solutions to problems like water purification and desalinization in the coming months.
He motivated the staff and students at INC to dedicate their efforts into not only coming up with research data leading to excellent publications, but also to see it all the way through, from concept to reality in the form of products and patents.
While congratulating Professor Absar Ahmad, Founder-Director (INC) for accepting their offer to join AMU after 23 years of distinguished service at the acclaimed CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, Pune; General Shah assured of great things to expect from INC owing to the excellent scholastic record and pioneering nanotechnology related research work carried out by Professor Ahmad.
AMU Pro Vice Chancellor Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran), who also congratulated INC, said that it is indeed a 'dream come true' that the INC has been established and in able hands of the best of minds in nanotechnology.
He added that with nanotechnology, anything is possible, and that however bizarre it may seem today to think of micro robots performing heart surgeries, it will one day very well be possible with nanotechnology.
He further said that within the short span of a year or so, he is confident that INC will obtain abundant funds from investors owing to the promising research perspectives proposed by Professor Absar Ahmad and that the infrastructure at INC will drastically evolve to make it as one of the best and most recognized nanotech research institutes worldwide.
Meanwhile, Professor Absar Ahmad thanked the Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellor and the executive committee members for believing in him and appointing him as the Director of INC. He added that vision of nanotechnology has been fulfilled due to the sincere support and cooperation from the Vice Chancellor and the Pro Vice Chancellor.
He pointed out that the foundation stone inauguration ceremony marks the 'beginning of a new journey'.
Professor Ahmad, whose research has been focused on the green fabrication of nanoparticles of different chemical compositions, sizes and shapes said that these nanoparticles possess unique properties like being water dispersible, protein capped, stable and non-toxic.
He pointed out the next step in this field will be dedicated toward the application view-point for these nanomaterials to be used in healthcare, agriculture, energy and environment, water purification and desalinization, etc. ?This part of the research will be conducted at the Interdisciplinary Nanotechnology Center at AMU,? said Professor Ahmad.
He added that INC will bring together under one umbrella the diverse activities of several research groups and collectively work towards the translation of their basic science into marketable products, processes and technologies.
Professor Ahmad also said that motivating the young minds, seeking collaborations and ultimately translation of research will be the prime focus of INC from day one.
While recalling AMU founder, Sir Syed's vision to harbor all new and novel fields of knowledge and research, Professor Alim Husain Naqvi (Adjunct Professor, INC) said that it is indeed a memorable day in history of the University and that the INC will work hand-in-hand with the existing domains of medicine, engineering, electronics, chemistry, physics, life sciences, etc.
Professor Naqvi praised Professor Absar Ahmad for his outstanding contributions to science, total citation of published work of around fifteen thousand seven hundred, h-index of 43, several national and international patents, publications in esteemed peer reviewed high impact factor journals (Nature Materials, JACS, Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, etc.) and for prestigious awards to his credit namely the VASVIK award for industrial excellence, DBT-Tata Innovation Fellowship, CSIR-NCL Scientist of the Year 2009, Materials and Research Society of India (MRSI) medal, etc. Professor Naqvi also encouraged the faculty members and students from various fields present at the ceremony to feel most welcome to approach INC for seeking collaborative research opportunities and in using the state-of-the-art research instruments available at INC.
