25-OCT-2017: Professor Gopal Krishnan Gandhi delivers Sir Syed Memorial Lecture
Aligarh, October 24: Noted author, columnist, former Governor of West Bengal and Mahatma Gandhi?s grandson; Professor Gopal Krishnan Gandhi delivered the Sir Syed Memorial Lecture on ?India at 70? at the Polytechnic Auditorium of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The lecture was organized by Sir Syed Academy.
Prof Gandhi discussed the growth of Indian economy since independence. He delineated on huge increase in literacy levels in the past 70 years and responsibilities of citizens in maintaining peace, harmony and respect for various cultures.
Praising AMU founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan; Prof Gandhi said that he was a man of multiple legacies and his efforts to impart modern, secular and scientific education led to the establishment of AMU, a citadel of learning which empowered the poor and backward.
Presiding over the lecture, AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor said that India has achieved a lot in the past 70 years and more needs to be done to further reform education system and generate more employment among other things.
?Prof Gandhi?s family shares a special relationship with AMU as his grandfather, Mahatma Gandhi was honoured with a life time membership of Aligarh Muslim University Students? Union in 1920,? said the Vice Chancellor. Prof Mansoor also presented a compendium of all Sir Syed Memorial lectures to Prof Gandhi. The book has been edited by Prof Shan Mohammad.
Prof Tariq Ahmad delivered the welcome address while Dr Faiza Abbasi conducted the programme. Prof Javaid Akhter (Registrar, AMU) proposed the vote of thanks.
