27-OCT-2017: Students from weaker sections receive ?Satyendra Kumar Kashyap Merit Scholarship? and ?Syed Athar Husain Rizvi Merit-cum-Means Scholarship?
Aligarh, October 26: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) alumni have always come together for contributing generously to their alma mater, but some have set standards for giving back even after years of their death.
The ?Satyendra Kumar Kashyap Merit Scholarship? for B Tech (Mechanical Engineering) students and ?Syed Athar Husain Rizvi Merit-cum-Means Scholarship? for B Tech and MBA students, which are making higher education affordable for AMU students from economically weaker sections have inspirational stories behind them.
Mr Satyendra Kumar Kashyap, who was a student of BE (Mechanical Engineering) 1962-66 batch, Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), AMU couldn?t continue education after his graduation due to financial constraints. He joined the Department of Irrigation, Uttar Pradesh Government as an Assistant Engineering to support family.
After many promotions, Mr Kashyap became the Superintending Engineer, Uttar Pradesh State Vigilance and with his success he decided to provide scholarships for AMU mechanical engineering students from weaker sections. Mr Kashyap breathed his last in 2010, but a scholarship on his name is still helping needy students to realise their dreams. Mr Kashyap?s daughter, Ms Deepali Kashyap and family members, Dr Veena Kashyap, Mrs Rama Gupta and Dr V K Kashyap awarded ?Satyendra Kumar Kashyap Merit Scholarship? to AMU B Tech students every year.
Professor Syed Athar Husain Rizvi lived through difficult financial situations in his childhood. Despite shortage of money, he completed BSc and MSc in Mechanical engineering from AMU. Before joining as a faculty in AMU, Prof Rizvi was selected for a full scholarship to attend the Cambridge University in UK.
Prof Rizvi passed away in 1995 and now his son Mr Syed Ali Jafar Rizvi runs the ?Syed Athar Husain Rizvi Merit-cum-Means Scholarship? for underprivileged B Tech and MBA students to fulfil his father?s last wish of easing out financial strains of students.
This year, USA based AMU alumnus, Er Faisal Saleem, Prof Mohammad Altamush Siddiqui (Chairperson, Department of Mechanical Engineering) and Dr Eijaz Ahmad distributed the ?Satyendra Kumar Kashyap Merit Scholarship? to mechanical engineering students; while Prof Ishtiyaq Zilli, Dr Saboohi Nasim, Prof Valeed Ansari, Dr M Jahangir Warsi, Mr Shaheer Khan (Moderator, AMU Network), Mr Abdul Hafeez Khan (Canada based AMU Alumnus) and Mr Omar S Peerzada (Public Relations Officer, AMU) distributed the ?Syed Athar Husain Rizvi Merit-cum-Means Scholarship? to B Tech and MBA students. The scholarships were distributed during a special function organised by Aligarh Education Endowment Fund at the Alumni Affairs Committee Office, AMU.
Presiding over the programme, Mr Abdul Hafeez Khan pointed out that scholarships are given to deserving students and this facility should be utilized in the best ways.
Prof M M Sufyan Beg (Principal, ZHCET) urged the recipients of the scholarships to help needy students after getting settled in the careers, while Mr Shaheer Khan motivated students to work hard and excel in academics and future life. At least 17 students were awarded scholarships on the occasion.
