27-OCT-2017: National Conference on Diamond and other Gemstones held
Aligarh, October 26: A two-day National Conference on ?Diamond and other Gemstones?, jointly organised by Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), South Asian Association of Economic Geologists and Forum of Indian Gemmologists started today to showcase the recent advancement in the field of gemmology in India.
Prof Tariq Mansoor, Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in his presidential address said, this conference brings together leading experts in the field of gemmology from the country and abroad to Aligarh to discuss the developments, trends, and future direction in gemstone acquisition, processing, and marketing industry.
He further said the relation between man and gemstone is known from the time immemorial. With civilization and technological advancement, this relationship is no longer restricted to the basic needs of mankind, but is extended further to increase the beauty and is even linked with the fortune of the wearer or the possessor.
He added India is a big exporter of diamond and students from AMU should start thinking about this lucrative business. He also deliberated about Koh-i-Noor Diamond (Mountain of Light) and its historical linkage with India.
Chief Guest of the event, Mr. Prateek Jhaveri, Managing Director of Emrusa Gems and Mining Ltd., Tanzania said, ?it is an honour to be part of this conference, more such programmes are needed as there is call to develop gem industries, upgrading the technologies for making our product and generate more income from gem and jewellery industry.
Organising Secretary Prof. Mondal said that since last two decades, there have been significant advances in research in diamond and their mineral inclusions, to understand the diamond-forming fluids and processes in the mantle.
Later, Abstract volume CDs were released jointly by all the dignitaries and a special Memento was presented to the Chief Guest Mr. Jhaveri by Prof Tariq Mansoor, who also inaugurated an exhibition of various jewelleries and gemstones.
Deliberations on geological setting, genesis and gemstones mineralization, gemstone exploration and exploitation (mining) technologies, gemstone industries, enhancement and treatment of gemstones, gem quality grading and appraisal and synthetic diamonds among other topics will take place during the two-day conference.
A number of delegates and guests from all over the country were present on the occasion. The inaugural function started at 10:30 am with the recitation of some verses from The Holy Quoran by Dr. Kumar Farahim Khan.
Prof. Liaqat Ali Khan Rao Sb, Convener of the Conference delivered his welcome address and Vote of thanks. Prof Mohd Shakir, Dean, Faculty of Science was also present on the occasion.
Prof. Abu Talib proposed the vote of thanks which was followed by University Tarana and National anthem.
