05-DEC-2017: Course held on Eclampsia under GIAN project
ALIGARH December 5: The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, J n Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organised a three-day course on ?Eclampsia: Solving the Puzzle and Ending Eclampsia? under MHRD-GIAN (Global Initiative of Academic Networks) project, a Government of India initiative for higher education.
Presiding over the Inaugural function, the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Tabassum Shahab shared his experience as a Paediatrician in dealing with babies born to mothers with eclampsia.
Dr Sarosh Rana, Professor and Head, Foetal Medicine, University of Chicago and an expert on hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, informed that maternal deaths from eclampsia in US were much lower due to early diagnosis and better facilities. ?The incidence of eclampsia can be reduced by close monitoring, early intervention and passionate cure?, she added.
In his keynote address, Dr Jaideep Malhotra, President Elect, Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of India and adjunct faculty, AMU said that a high incidence of eclampsia was due to ignorance in mothers and lack of infrastructure at primary health care level.
Prof Vinita Das, Head of Department of OBG and Professor Anjoo Agarwal from King George?s Medical University, Lucknow presented their study of eclampsia patients and discussed some new modalities of management.
Dr M Tariq Ali, renowned critical intensivist and Director, Critical Care, Medanta Institute of Critical Care, Gurgaon shared outcome of such critical patients in a tertiary care hospital.
Professor Tamkin Khan, Chairman of the Department and Coordinator of the course said that the GIAN project is a Government of India initiative for higher education which was launched in 2015. The objective is to sponsor eminent international experts in various fields for a couple of week stay at any centre of higher education.
Professor Khan said that hypertension during pregnancy is responsible for nearly 40% of all maternal deaths in India while preeclampsia-Eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and prenatal deaths with lifelong implications.
Dr M J Warsi, local GIAN Coordinator congratulated the organisers for participation of a good number of delegates including private practioners and those from Faculty of Medicine, Unani Medicine and Social Sciences.
Professor Hameeda Tariq, a renowned Paediatrician, who graced the valedictory function as chief guest, stressed the need for hard work and devotion in patient care.
