15-DEC-2017: Woodbine School hosts symposium on Sir Syed
Aligarh, December 15: The Woodbine Floret Public School, Aligarh hosted a symposium on Sir Syed Ahmad Khan to mark his bicentenary celebrations. The programme was organised by the Sir Syed Bicentenary Committee, AMU.
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Court Member, Mr Javed Said pointed out that Sir Syed always believed in a pluralistic society with secular principles. ?This was the reason, why he appointed a Christian and a Hindu as Principal and Vice-Principal of the Mohammaden Anglo Oriental (MAO) College,? said Mr Javed.
He further pointed out that Sir Syed was a rationalist, who believed that communities cannot progress without accepting and embracing modern scientific education.
Prof Naima Gulrez (Principal, Women?s College, AMU) said that Sir Syed wanted to educate women at a time, when modern education for women was a taboo. ?Sheikh Abdullah, who is still popularly known as Papa Miyan, followed Sir Syed?s footsteps to establish the Abdullah Girls College in AMU,? said Prof Gulrez.
Prof Shakeel Samdani (Programme Convener) said that Sir Syed had a unique way to protest against the British rule. ?Sir Syed made the British accept the need of education in India,? said Prof Samdani. He added that this was his way of turning foes into friends.
Prof Samdani also said that Sir Syed has left a historical example on how to establish educational institutions and on how to work for reforms in society.
Presiding over the function, Prof Shafey Kidwai (Department of Mass Communications, AMU) said that Sir Syed wanted to groom students in the best of ways along with their formal education and this was the reason why he launched the ?Tehzeeb-ul-Akhlaq?.
?Since there is no substitute to hard work, students should strive to achieve their academic goals,? urged Prof Kidwai to the school students.
