13-MAR-2018: Condolence meeting organised to mourn Prof Maqbool?s demise
Aligarh, March 13: A condolence meeting to mourn the sad demise of Professor Maqbool Hasan Khan, former chairperson, Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was held at the Faculty of Arts.
Prof Farhatullah Khan (Emeritus Prof, AMU), who was Prof Maqbool Hasan Khan?s colleague, narrated the experience of working with him. He said that Prof Maqbool was humble and honest, a scholar par excellence and a very dear friend.
Prof Mohammad Zahid (Dean, Faculty of Arts) recalled with sincerity his days as a student of Prof Maqbool and discussed his contributions in academia.
Prof Mohammad Asim Siddiqui (Chairperson, Department of English) reminisced attending Prof Maqbool?s classes during his undergraduate and postgraduate days in the department. He described Prof Maqbool?s perfectly structured and highly articulate lectures which were filled with scholarly depth.
Prof Samina Khan and Dr Mona Shabbir Khan, who were Prof Maqbool?s students and later worked with him, mourned the irreparable void that he has left behind.

After completing M A in English from Lucknow University in 1959, Prof Maqbool was awarded the British Council Scholarship in Shakespeare Institute, Birmingham in 1974. He did another M A in Shakespeare Studies from Birmingham University, U K.
Prof Maqbool?s work was widely published in English and Urdu. His work on Dowden and Walter Raleigh?s ?Shakespearean Criticism? is especially worthy of mention. He also edited Hamlet and Tempest, with very insightful introductions and annotations, which were published by Orient Blackswan. He served as lecturer of English at Government College, Kota (Rajasthan) from 1961 to 1963. He joined the Department of English, AMU as a lecturer on January 25, 1963. He became a reader in 1977 before being promoted as a Professor in 1985. Prof Khan served as a chairperson with the Department of English, AMU in 1993 for three years. He was again appointed as the chairperson from 1997 to 1998 before retiring on May 31, 1998.
Teachers, scholars and students from across the university got together to pay tributes to Prof Maqbool, whose popularity as a teacher remains unparalleled.
