?Women should be physically, mentally, psychologically strong:? Dr Hameeda Tariq
Aligarh, March 28: Dr Hameeda Tariq, a renowned paediatrician and wife of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor said that since domestic violence is one of the most frightening and traumatic of experiences, women going through this complicated dilemma should be physically, mentally, psychologically and spiritually strong. She was speaking as the Chief-Guest in a conference on ?Empowerment of Women, Concept and Roadmap? at the Women?s College, AMU.
She pointed out that domestic violence leaves marks in the body and minds. ?Women are battered by abusive husbands,? said Dr Hameeda adding that women in such situations need to cultivate friendships and develop bonds with strong groups while making themselves aware of their rights.
Dr Hameeda said that to empower woman is to make them healthy.
Prof Anwar Jahan Zuberi (Former Vice-Chancellor, Calicut University) said that she is proud to be a women as women are stronger than men. ?I am proud to be an Indian woman as our constitution gives us complete equality and I am proud to be a Muslim woman as Islam has given those rights centuries back which we are talking about today,? she said emphasizing that woman should be given rights and important places in decision making.
Prof Naima Gulrez (Principal, Women?s College) congratulated the organisers for a successful conference on women issues. She said that the speakers of the programme are source of inspiration.
Prof Rachna Kaushal said that empowerment means to have the capacity to fight against injustice. ?A poor woman can empower herself if she stands against the wrongs in society,? she said. Prof Kaushal further said that discrimination against women starts when they are considered weaker to men in their families because they are not the bread earners.
Dr Bazigha Dhuru stated that women should develop strong abilities to understand the negative things around them. Ms Tahzeema Kabeer discussed cultural degradation.
Council for Research and Empowerment of Women (CREW) members presented Dr Hameeda Tariq, Ms Rizwana Tauqeer, Ms Naima Gulrez, Ms Amina Malik, Ms Rachna Kaushal and Ms Lubna Shabbir with honorary membership certificates.
A short story collection by Dr Bazigha Dhuru, ?Sadi Mangti Hai Nazrana? , Edition II was also released on the occasion.
Ms Arshi Zafar Khan welcomed the dignitaries, while Ms Baria Khan proposed the vote of thanks. Ms Fakiha Firdaus conducted the programme.
