Panel discusses technology use with visually impaired students
Aligarh, April 16: There is no doubt that new developments in accessible technology have made it easier than ever for the visually-impaired to connect and the Disability Unit, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is behind to none in connecting differently-able students to the best gadgets as it is exploring how technology can be used to help these students and how they can use the most updated computers, audiobooks, speech reading apps, handheld scanners and more.
Recently in an interactive session of visually impaired students with a panel comprising Prof Adbul Waheed (Dept of Sociology), Dr Bhupati (Dept of English), Dr Yogesh Kumar Yadav (Dept of History), Dr Mohib Anwar (Department of Law), Dr Fizzah Haider (Dept of Political Science) and Dr Mustaq A Zargar (Dept of Modern Indian Languages), ways and methods of learning through computers and other gadgets and software designed to cater the learning needs of visually challenged were discussed.
The University panel delineated technological advances that have helped the blind, and people with other disabilities, in so many ways. Features which help the visually impaired to access and send emails and various issues faced while learning were also discussed.
The panel further interacted with the Disability Unit office bearers including Prof Khalid Bin Yusuf Khan (Coordinator); Placement Officers, Dr Raiz Ahmed and Dr Syed Faiz Zaidi and the counsellors. Suggestions were given by the panel for empowering visually challenged students and teachers.
Talking on the needs of differently-able students, Prof Khalid Bin Yusuf Khan said that the Disability Unit of the University is doing the best to ensure that gadgets are provided to such students to facilitate learning. He added that the Unit is solving all genuine problems of visually impaired students and other differently-able students. Prof Khan also thanked the panel members for their efforts.
Tricycles, head phones, memory-cards and pen-drives were also distributed to students on the occasion. Dr Riaz Ahmed and Dr Syed Faiz Zaidi helped managing and organising the programme.
