Five patients undergo bariatric procedures at live workshop in JNMC
Aligarh, April 26: A few months ago, even climbing a flight of stairs for five obese patients who underwent bariatric surgeries at the first ever live workshop organised by the Department of Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) would leave them with pain in their knees, hips and back.
After the affordable bariatric procedures, these patients can now live longer with lower risks of cancer and Type 2 diabetes. They now have normal blood pressures and lesser chances of heart diseases and arthritis, which was not possible when they weighed between 95 and 110 Kgs before the surgery.
With these bariatric surgeries, JNMC now joins the list of hospitals in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Indore, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad where over 100 weight loss surgeries are performed every day.
Dr Ramen Goel (AMU alumnus and eminent bariatric and metabolic surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai), Dr Sarfaraz Baig (Bariatric Surgeon, Belle Clinic, Kolkatta), Dr Maniruzzaman (Bariatric anaesthetist) and Dr Amit performed the surgeries at the live workshop. They were assisted by Prof Moied Ahmad, Dr Shahana Ali and Dr Abu Nadeem from the Department of Anaesthesiology, JNMC.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ramen Goel said that since JNMC is his alma mater, it is an honour to perform these surgeries here. He assured his assistance for developing a Bariatric Surgery Unit in Department of Surgery, JNMC.
Dr Goel pointed out that obese patients cannot lose weight just by lifestyle modifications as they need medical intervention. ?Poor people who can?t afford meal twice a day are also getting obese which means it is not a lifestyle issue but a disease,? he said adding that by providing affordable bariatric surgery options, hospitals can serve humanity.
Welcoming the guests, Prof Mohammad Aslam (Chairperson, Department of Surgery) pointed out that the Department of Surgery is working hard to develop a specialized Bariatric Surgery Unit and once this facility comes up in JNMC, it will be great relief for people in Uttar Pradesh, who travel long distances for the surgery.
Prof S C Sharma (Dean, Faculty of Medicine) discussed the rising need of performing obesity and metabolic surgery to cure multitude of ailments. He praised Dr Ramen Goel, Dr Sarfaraz Baig and their team for accepting the invitation and demonstrating live surgeries.
Prof Afzal Anees (Organising Secretary of the workshop) proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Bushra Siddiqui conducted the programme.
