MOOC related meeting held at AMU
ALIGARH April 27: On invitation of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Dr (Mrs) Pankaj Mittal, Additional Secretary University Grants Commission (UGC) visited university to have an interaction with policy makers of AMU , including Deans, Chairmen , Principals and Head of the departments. The meeting was intended to sensitize AMU faculty about the government initiative about MOOCs (massive open online courses) delivered on SWAYAM (Study Web of Active Learning by Young and Aspiring Minds) platform.
During her power point presentation, Dr Mittal said, SWAYAM is a programme initiated by Government of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality.
She added that MOOCs have emerged as a viable model for imparting education, involving conventional and online education. The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.
Elaborating her presentation, she emphasised that the courses hosted on SWAYAM are in 4 quadrants ? (1) video lecture, (2) specially prepared reading material that can be downloaded/printed (3) self-assessment tests through tests and quizzes and (4) an online discussion forum for clearing the doubts. At the end of each course, there will be an assessment of the student through proctored examination and the marks/grades secured in this exam could be transferred to the academic record of the students.
During the interactive session, Pro-Vice Chancellor of AMU, Prof. Tabassum Shahab appreciated the efforts of Dr. Mittal for promoting such initiative and assured her that AMU will join hands to promote MOOCs on SWAYAM platform and also encourage students to get enrolled in MOOCs courses from coming academic year, he also urged teachers to come forward and be a part of this initiative by developing courses for this programme.
