23-MAY-2018: AMU signs MoU with Healing Little Hearts
Aligarh, May 23: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UK based NGO, Healing Little Hearts (HLH) for cooperation in conducting complex congenital cardiac surgeries in the University's Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC).
AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor, Prof Tabassum Shahab (Pro Vice Chancellor) and AMU alumnus, Dr Shamshul Zoha, a UK based Pediatric Cardiac Intensivist initiated the collaboration; while Prof Javaid Akhter (Registrar), Prof Mohammad Hanif Beg (Chairperson, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery) and Dr Azam Haseem signed the MoU with HLH's Dr Sanjiv Nichani (Consultant Paediatric Interventionist, UK) and Dr Shamshul Zoha.
The MoU will felicitate free heart surgeries to babies and children that need it the most, said Prof Mohammad Hanif Beg.
"Since independent researches show yearly births of over 1, 00,000 babies with congenital heart defects in India, it is high time to take necessary steps for helping these children with heart ailments," said Prof Beg pointing out many children requiring corrective heart surgeries do not get treated due to financial constraints and even the affordable treatment available is sub-standard with poor expertise.
He further said that JNMC provides affordable treatment with state-of-art facilities to patients from under privileged sections.
Earlier in April, Healing Little Hearts UK team headed by Dr Mohammad Nassar, UK based Pediatric Cardiac surgeon Prof Beg and Dr M Azam Haseen successfully operated children with complex cardiac defects and vascular abnormalities at the JNMC in which Dr Shamim Gauhar, Dr Alan Mcheyne, Dr Nadeem Raza and Dr Munazir Athar provided anaesthesia.
The angiography of the patients, who were rejected treatments by various medical centres in North India was done by Dr Shaad Abqari, Dr Kamran Mirza and Dr Neil Seller. While Dr Shehzad Alam, Dr Shamshul Zoha and Dr Emma Simpson provided the post-operative care to the children; Sabir Ali Khan, Nigel Cross and Anwar Rizwi gave perfusion. Prof S C Sharma (Principal, JNMC) congratulated the team of surgeons for conducting these operations.
