21-AUG-2018: Noted surgeon, Professor Anurag Srivastava delivers extension lecture in JNMC
Aligarh, August 21: Noted surgeon and researcher on breast diseases, Professor Anurag Srivastava, Head, Department of Surgical Disciplines, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi delivered an extension lecture on 'Recent Trends in the Care of Carcinoma Breast' at the Seminar Hall of the Department of Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in which he discussed methods of biopsy, mastectomy, breast-conserving-surgery and patterns of care among other topics.
Prof Srivastava said that more women in their 30s and 40s are affected with breast cancer than other age groups in India. He pointed out that Delhi has the most cases of breast cancer, followed by Chennai, Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram.
"There is a paradigm shift from radical mastectomy to breast-conserving-surgery in the treatment process of the breast cancer," said Prof Srivastava pointing out that there is a possibility that soon microvave or Photodynamic ablation and immunotherapy will replace the surgeries we have today for breast cancer.
He said that breast cancer can be prevented by reducing weight, eating less fat, developing a habit of physical exercise and having the first child before the age of 25. It is also necessary for women to undergo breast clinical examinations when they see small lumps in the breasts, said Prof Srivastava.
AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor lauded the work of Prof Srivastava. He pointed out that there is an increasing need for early detection and treatment of breast cancer for improved survival and quality of life. Prof Mansoor suggested joint research programmes and collaborations between JNMC and AIIMS for benefits of patients and society.
Welcoming the guests, Prof Mohammad Aslam, Chairperson, Department of Surgery said that the increasing breast cancer cases in India point to low awareness. He thanked the Vice Chancellor, the guest speaker, other guests and functionaries for making the programme a success.
Dr Urooj Najmi conducted the programme.
