05-OCT-2018: Dept of Library and Information Science organises awareness programme on MOOCS and SWAYAM
Aligarh, October 5: Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are fast becoming a staple training and study for knowledge-hungry students and research scholars. An awareness programme on 'MOOCs and Study Web of Active Learning by Young and Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM)' organised by the Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University threw light on how one can leverage this new tool to add value on professional portfolios.
Welcoming the participants, Dr Sudharma Haridasan, Chairperson, Department of Library and Information Science said that MOOC is distance learning, with a web flare. "Any person can sign up to take a class offered by universities all over the world including the ivy-league schools," she said.
Dr Sudharma added MOOCs have emerged as a viable model for imparting education, involving conventional and online education and every student must enrol in the courses offered on MOOCs and SWAYAM platforms for interactive learning and acquiring unique skills and qualifications.
Dr Mohammad Nazim, Facilitator of MOOCs (SWAYAM), Department of Library and Information Science said that SWAYAM is a government of India initiative designed to provide life-long learning.
"Through the SWAYAM platform, a learner can choose from hundreds of courses, virtually every course, taught at the university, college and school levels by the best teachers in India and abroad," said Dr Nazim while giving a presentation on SWAYAM courses.
Azra Aftab, Research Scholar, Department of Library and Information Science provided the participants with hands-on-training in registration and training of these courses.
Faculty members, research scholars and students of the Department of Library and Information Science and other departments attended the programme.
