06-OCT-2018: Prof Svetlana Ryzhakova, Russian Theatre Scholar, visits AMU
Aligarh, October 6, 2018: Professor Svetlana Ryzhakova, a Russian theatre scholar and an anthropologist recently visited Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and conducted an ?Interaction-cum-Workshop on Theatre? at the University?s Cultural Education Centre?s Drama Club.
During the session Prof Svetlana said that she has been working to explore the local customs and rituals of several tribes across India and how theatre has served as a conduit of expression for last 20 years.
In an open session Prof Ryzhakova shared her views from her experience and expertise. She has frequented almost all states of India ranging from Rajasthan to Manipur interacting with the folk artists and studying the different cultures and rituals.
She spoke on a myriad range of topics such as ?Bhutokolam? which may be likened to controlled possession which has later been rechristened as ?Daivaskolam? with a spread of education. The conversation was diverse in its range stressing on the fact that theatre and performance transcends all spatio temporal borders.
Students participated in the workshop and expressed their views and knowledge of theatre. Razia Khanum, secretary of University Drama Club, brought up the glorious history of Drama Club and its achievements. Uzma Shafi, a research scholar presented a picture of theatre activities and the challenges in Kashmir. Sanjida Parveen and Mohd. Yassin, research scholars shared their views on theatre and their native places.
The workshop was organized by Dr. Vibha Sharma, President of University Drama Club at CEC. She shared an interesting anecdote on how to switch roles between an individual and a character which can be taken up by all theatre enthusiasts.
Prof Svetlana ended the talk with a message, ?performing is just like an act of having food, once the food is over the act is over". She hints at the kind of precision an actor acquires over the years to balance between reality and stage.
Prof F S Sherani (coordinator CEC) welcomed Prof Ryzhakova and praised the Drama Club for organizing highly fruitful workshop.
A research scholar Momin Ali coordinated the program.
Prof Svetlana also paid visits to the Department of English, Musa Dakri Museum, the Cultural Education Centre and Sir Syed Hall.
