15-OCT-2018: Dept of Community Medicine observes Global Handwashing Day-2018
Aligarh, October 15: The Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) observed the Global Handwashing Day-2018 at the Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) to spread awareness on importance of hand washing as an effective method for preventing diseases and boosting immunity.
Speaking on poor sanitation and unhygienic conditions, Prof Ali Amir, Chairperson, Department of Community Medicine pointed out, "The World Health Organisation estimates that 50 percent of cases of repeated diarrhea and intestinal infections in children are due to lack of hygiene and safe water."
"Hand washing helps prevent diseases, keeps food safe, keeps the environment clean, safe and fresh and also helps children grow strong and healthy," said Prof Amir.
Dr Suboohi Afzal, Chief Medical Officer, UHTC said that this year, the Global Handwashing Day theme, 'Clean Hands-A recipe for Health' focuses on the links between hand washing and food-including food hygiene and nutrition. During her speech, she emphasised the importance of washing hands with soap at critical times, especially before eating, cooking, or feeding others. "Establish places to wash your hands in the household, in your community, in schools, workplaces, and in health facilities," she pointed out.
Dr Ali Jafer Abedi, Member-in-charge, UHTC urged people attended the programme to model good hand washing behaviour, and to remind or help others to always wash their hands before eating.
Dr Saleem Mohammad Khan, Dr Sana Nawab, Dr Tazeen Shams with other resident doctors and junior residents demonstrated steps of proper hand washing.
Dr Shaique and Dr Shalini presented posters on hand washing. Social work students, Itrat and Jawed helped organising awareness events in the Primary School of Patwari Nagla.
