23-OCT-2018: AMU Associate Prof delivers Plenary Talk on 'Translation across Cultures'
Aligarh, October 23: When we see a 'Google Translate' on phones and laptops, it is reflective of the fact that all countries depend on each other for carrying businesses and other activities and language is no longer a barrier.
To elaborate on multidimensional significance of translation in our daily lives, Dr M J Warsi, Coordinator, Translation Cell and Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) delivered a Plenary Talk on 'Translation across Cultures: The Construction and Representation of Linguistic and Cultural Diversity' at an international conference organized by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Jaypee Institute of Information Technology in Noida.
Dr Warsi, who has translated Premchand's stories in English said, "The need for more effective communication across different countries is growing and translations play an important role in developing one's competence to have a better understanding of cultural diversity through the meaning and expressions of literary text in any given language."
He further said that there is no doubt that translations establish contacts between cultures, but there is a also the constant need for improvements. "Translators should always try to increase their knowledge and means of expression while looking for new facts and words," emphasised Dr Warsi.
Dr Warsi delineated translation as a cultural and linguistic practice, wielding enormous power in constructing representations of foreign cultures and at the same time constructing subjectivities of its receptors.
