24-OCT-2018: Doors open at JNMC for Closure of Ventricular Septal Defects in babies
ALIGARH October 24: The Pediatric Cardiac Evaluation and Cardiac Surgery Unit, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University has started process for closure of Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), closing of hole in heart for general understanding, which otherwise would have required an open heart surgery in Cardiac Cath lab with the help of special devices.
Dr Shaad Abqari, Nodal officer PCE-CS Unit, who has received training in this branch from AIIMS, Kochi, said that a dedicated PCE-CS Unit has been established under Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), National Health Mission (NHM) for taking care of children with heart defects and this type of procedure is being performed for the first time in Aligarh besides a few centres in the country already working in this area. He said that 18 cases of VSDs have been treated so far and children with this defect are being referred from various parts of the state.
Dr Abqari said that the procedure is done completely free of cost for the children referred under RBSK scheme.
Dr Mirza Mohd Kamran, a child heart specialist and a member of PCE-CS Unit team has performed all these procedures with the help of Dr Shaad Abqari, Dr Shahzad Ahmed (Pediatric Intensivist) and Dr Shamim Gauhar (Cardiac Anaesthetist).
Prof Tabassum Shahab, Convener of the project, said that with this procedure available at JNMC, children from the city and around will be immensely benefited and they would not have to go to big cities for this treatment. He also thanked the CVTS team comprising Prof MH Beg, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Chairman, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Dr Azam Haseen, Associate Professor for their constant support in this endeavour.
