26-OCT-2018: Dept of Community Medicine begins two-day, XXI Annual Conference of IAPSM UP and UK State Chapter-2018
Aligarh, October 26: The Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) today started the two-day, XXI Annual Conference of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM) UP and UK State Chapter-2018 on the theme, 'Strengthening of Health System and Primary Health Care for Universal Health Coverage' to provide a platform for discussions on varied aspects of community medicine and public health.
Speaking at the inaugural function held at the JNMC Auditorium, the Chief Guest, Prof Rusli Bin Nordin, Head, School of Medicine, Taylor's University, Malaysia said that the conference is an opportunity for participants to improve their knowledge and skills in preventive and social medicine. "This IAPSM conference will be a perfect mix of inspiring scholastic experiences and ingenious exchange of ideas for the learner from the learned," he pointed out.
Renowned paediatrician and president of the session, Dr Hameeda Tariq said that this conference has a very important theme and it should not be missed by students. She further said that the conference also reminds her of the days when she used to attend community medicine lectures in JNMC.
Discussing health of women and children, Dr Hameeda emphasised, "A healthy mother will have healthy children and no country can progress without the well-being of women." She also spoke on how to reduce mortality rate and control viruses.
Prof S C Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Medicine said, "I trust the participants will find the sessions in the conference very insightful, stimulating and encouraging to understand and generate new ideas and develop new skills."
Delivering the welcome address, Prof Ali Amir, Organising Chairman of the conference pointed out, "It is noteworthy that the State Conference of IAPSM UP Chapter is being organised by the Department of Community Medicine after a gap of 24 year. It was last organised in 1994. The presentations in the programme will be of practical value for health professionals working in diverse settings."
Prof A M Kadri, Secretary General, IAPSM said that conferences like these are academic feast to the professionals providing them opportunities to upgrade their knowledge and skills.
Speaking on the history of IAPSM, Prof S K Singh, Vice President, IAPSM said that its inception, IAPSM has been dedicated to the promotion of public health by bringing expertise from its specialists in epidemiology, health management, health promotion, and family medicine.
Prof Vinod K Shrivastava, IEA, WHO Liaison, said that it is imperative to work on creating evidence based policies, which can contribute to health of common people and it is also important to extend technical support in capacity building and monitoring and evaluation of health services.
Prof Jyoti Prakash Srivastava and Prof Sushil Chandra Saxena were conferred with the Prof Devki Nandan Lifetime Achievement Award-2018 during the inaugural function for their contribution in community medicine, while Prof Uday Mohan received the Prof B G Prasad Oration Award on the occasion.
Prof M Athar Ansari (Organizing Secretary) proposed the vote of thanks.
Dr Saira Mehnaz (Co-Organising Secretary) introduced the guests. Dr Ali Jafar Abedi (Treasurer) read the citations of the awardees and Dr Shariq Aqeel conducted the programme.
