17-NOV-2018: Institute of Ophthalmology organises Alumni Meet
Aligarh, November 17: The alumni of the Institute of Ophthalmology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) renewed their old associations with warm-hearted camaraderie and joy of meeting after a long time writ on their faces at the Institute's Alumni Meet.
"This is truly a global meet," said the AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor as alumni from USA, UK, other European countries, Middle East and various parts of India are attending the meet.
The alumni attending this programme are not only the brand ambassadors of this institute, but also of the AMU culture, said the Vice Chancellor.
He emphasised that AMU alumni are spread all over the world. "The Sir Syed Day functions take place from USA to South Korea. Recently on a trip to Singapore, the Indian High Commissioner informed me that the he was invited to attend the Sir Syed Day and that he finds AMU culture as uniquely rich and distinctive from other universities," said Prof Mansoor.
He delineated that our alumni can guide and mentor the current students by sharing their experiences and expertise. "With the Alig's Academic Enrichment Programme (AAEP), alumni from all over the world are delivering lectures to current students and also guiding them to shape their careers," said the Vice Chancellor.
He further pointed out that soon a directory with contact details of alumni spread all over the world will be released. "We are also starting the Kashish programme, which will connect children of alumni with AMU through special programmes and a Winter University programme to bring alumni to AMU for delivering lectures will also be started," said Prof Mansoor.
Extending heartiest welcome to the alumni, the Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof M H Beg said an objective of this reunion is to develop an instant multiple and multi-level bridge between a large number of alumni of different batches and present students.
"It is a great moment for us to visit the same place after a long time. Such events help in getting information to alumni to know how their alma mater is growing both in quality as well as the number of students. It really helps us to revive those unforgettable days," said Prof Beg.
The Guest of Honour, Dr Anil Tara (AMU Alumnus and Consultant and CEO, Indira Gandhi Group of Eye Hospitals, New Delhi) said that most of us came to AMU as teenagers and our alma mater moulded us into the professionals, we are today. "The contribution of our alumni towards AMU and the society is a matter of pride for all of us and we should always remember that the key positions, we hold today are because of this University," he said.
Prof S C Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Medicine informed that the Institute of Ophthalmology has launched its website, http://amuio.in/. He pointed out that since January 2018, the Institute has successfully done 517 Phaco and 579 SICS cataract surgeries, 29 vitrectomy and 11 RD retina surgeries, 644 OCT and 101 retina investigation techniques, 240 retina green argon laser procedures, 335 perimetry procedures and 35615 refractions.
Prof Saiyid Nasir Askari (Director, Institute of Ophthalmology and Chairman of the Organising Committee) said that the Institute has been successfully conducting various types of surgeries in past many years and every year new state-of-art new facilities are introduced. We welcome the alumni to see all the new facilities at their alma mater and have discussions on achievements, said Prof Askari.
Prof Adeeb Alam Khan (Organising Secretary) said that this Institute was inaugurated in 1955 with the aim of providing finest postgraduate clinical training and research in all sub specialties of Ophthalmology. "What started as sapling has now grown into a tree with branches spread all over. Our alumni are settled and working in various parts of the world," said Prof Khan.
Prof Simi Zaka-ur-Rab (Co-Organising Secretray) proposed the vote of thanks, while Dr Ziya Siddiqui gave introduction of the alumni attending the programme. Dr Abdul Waris accompanied the alumni during felicitation. Dr Yusra conducted the programme.
