22-NOV-2018: ACS establishes Dept of Chemistry, AMU Chapter
Aligarh, November 22: The American Chemical Society (ACS) has established its Chapter at the Department of Chemistry, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to support and enhance professional development of students and to broader the chemistry enterprise and its practitioners.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Prof M Shakir, Dean, Faculty of Science and Chief Advisor ACS AMU Chapter informed that the initiative to bring ACS chapter to AMU was taken by BSC Industrial Chemistry, final-year students. "It is a big achievement which will be highly beneficial to the University," he said.
Speaking on the importance on becoming ACS member, Dr Mohammad Zain Khan, Faculty Advisor, ACS Student's Chapter pointed out, "The member students will become a part of large network of researchers across the globe and would receive guidance to pursue their higher studies abroad. The society offers scholarships and travel grants for attending workshops, conferences and short-term courses."
Prof Anees Ahmad informed that the ACS Chapter will receive US dollars 2,500 grant funding for attending the 257th ACS National Meeting in Orlando, USA. "Mr M Hamza, President, ACS Chapter and Ms Arish Naim, Secretary, ACS Chapter will attend the meeting in Orlando," said Prof Ahmad.
Prof Sartaj Tabassum, Chairman, Department of Chemistry promised his support to the chapter in all possible ways.
A science quiz competition was also organised on the occasion. ACS is a scientific society based in the United States that supports scientific inquiry in the field of chemistry.
