22-NOV-2018: Condolence meeting for Professor S. Wiqar Husain at the Department of English, AMU
Aligarh, November 22: The Department of English, AMU held a condolence meeting for Professor S. Wiqar Husain, Former Chairman, Department of English, AMU.
Prof. Farhatullah Khan, Professor Emeritus, Department of English fondly remembered the scholarly repartee he enjoyed with Professor S. Wiqar Husain, and added that he was a man of high intellectual calibre and enviable scholarship.
Professor Nuzhat Zeba recalled various anecdotes about him, highlighting the fact that Professor S. Wiqar Husain was like a cypress tree in the Department of English providing moral support and strength to the young and old alike.
Prof. Sagheer Ifraheim reminisced about his long association with Professor S. Wiqar Husain who was a father figure to him. He said that Professor S. Wiqar Husain's level of scholarship perhaps may be unattainable for ordinary people. Hence one may rather endeavour to be a human being like him.
Professor S. Wiqar Husain?s elder cousin, Mr. Mir Isteqamat Ali Rizvi shared his fond memories he has of the departed soul.
Reading the condolence note on behalf of the Department of English, Professor Asim Siddiqui described Professor S. Wiqar Husain as a polymath. He also dwelt on Prof Husain's wide reading of fiction, English and Continental. He further informed the audience about Wiqar Sahib's cultured wit, his love of cricket and his concern for others.
"This meeting of the teachers and students of the Department of English places on record its deep sense of grief over the sad and sudden demise of Professor S. Wiqar Husain on 17 November 2018. Professor S. Wiqar Husain was born on 10 February 1942 in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh. After completing his early education in Burhanpur, he came to Aligarh for his further studies. He did his BA and MA from Aligarh Muslim University with great distinction. He joined the Department of English of Aligarh Muslim University in mid sixties and his continuous appointment in the Department of English, AMU was from 8 October 1970. He became Reader on 1 January 1983 and Professor on 4 June 1993. He became the Chairman of the Department of English on 14 January 1999 and completed his three-year term with great success. The Department organized its first Refresher Course in English in collaboration with UGC Academic Staff College under his chairmanship. The Department also took an initiative in restructuring many courses, especially Compulsory English Courses, under his leadership. He superannuated from service on 8 February 2004 and retired on 29 October 2004.
Prof Husain was known for his encyclopaedic knowledge of literature and culture. He was very well read in fiction, both English/American as well as Continental. He was also truly a multilingual scholar well versed in Urdu and Persian literature. There is total agreement about the fact that he was one of the finest teachers that one can come across anywhere.
Prof. Husain represented the finest of human values and cultured forms of behavior. Simple, humble and soft-spoken, he was honest, straightforward and direct in equal measure. A very kind-hearted man, he helped a lot of people both in their professional career and in their personal life. He was a messiah-like figure for the poor people in his neighborhood.
In his death, Aligarh Muslim University has lost an outstanding teacher, a top rate scholar and an exceptionally good human being. May his soul rest in peace. Amen."
The meeting was attended by Professor Masoodul Hassan, Professor Najma Mahmood, Professor Tariq Chattari, Dr Hayat Amir, Dr Preeti Saeed, Dr Latif Kazmi and other teachers and students of the Department of English.
