23-NOV-2018: AMU wins North-Zone Intervarsity Hockey Tournament
Aligarh, November 23: In a one-sided last league match, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) overwhelmed Punjab University Chandigarh 6/1 to win North-Zone Intervarsity Hockey Tournament.
In the last league match played here today, GNDU Amritsar emerged runners-up besides these two teams, MDU Rohtak and Punjabi University Patiala all through made it to All India Intervarsity Hockey tournament.
In a fast-paced match, AMU's nippy full back, Lokesh Bora broke the defence and sounded the board in the tenth minute. AMU raided the rival's territory time and again and scored three more goals in quick succession. Sonu Kumar, Abid Ali, Akash and Akhtab were the scorers. Before the lemon break, AMU's captain, Badruzzama Siddiqui converted a penalty stroke. In the second half, Mohammad Faraz completed the tally and Harpreet Singh of Punjab University Chandgarh reduced the lead in the 32nd minute.
Meanwhile, GNDU Amritsar defeated Punjabi University Patiala 4/1 with Mehleet Singh, Gurkirat Singh, Manderjeet Singh and Harpreet Singh scoring one goal each, while Harjeet Singh for Punjabi University Patiala was the lone scorer.
AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor presented the winner and runner-up trophy to AMU and GNDU Amritsar teams respectively. He congratulated all the teams for making the tournament successful.
Dr Gurdeep Singh, Joint Secretary, Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Prof M H Beg (AMU Pro Vice Chancellor), Mr Abdul Hamid (IPS and AMU Registrar), Prof S Amjad Ali Rizvi (Secretary, University Games Committee), Dr G S Hashmi (President, Hockey Club), Mr Anees ur Rahman Khan (Deputy Director Sports, AMU) and Mr Arshad Mahmood (Assistant Director Sports, AMU) were present on the occasion. Former AMU hockey captains also attended the final matches.
