24-NOV-2018: ICC organises poetry session cum awareness drive on 'Gender Discrimination and Harassment at Workplaces'
Aligarh, November 24: The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organised an 'Open Mic' poetry session cum awareness drive on the theme, 'Gender Discrimination and Harassment at Workplaces' in which students recited poems on the issues of women's safety and gender disparities at workplaces, public spaces and at homes.
ICC student representative, Shaziya Imam highlighted implicit gender discrimination and touched raw nerves by reciting Tanvir Ghazi's poem, "Tu khud ki khoj mein nikal, tu kis liye hataash hai, tu chal tere vajood ki samay ko bhi talaash hai (Go, find yourself, why are you despondent? Go, even time is looking for your existence)."
Anam Rizwan and Mohammad Ghaus performed popular songs such as 'Bekhauf' and 'Aashayein' to throw light on the most vital of women's perpetual fights. Students also recited Kaifi Azmi's poem, Aurat, which instigates women to rise up and achieve their full potential against patriarchies.
Presiding over the programme, Prof Shaheena Tarannum (Department of English) said that ICC is committed to ensure zero tolerance towards gender discrimination and harassment in accordance with the laws.
Proposing the vote of thanks, ICC member, Mr Javed Said emphasized the need to change attitudes and mind-sets for gender equality in society.
ICC members, Dr Farha Ashhar (CMO, MAS), Dr Fazila Shahnawaz (Department of History) and Mrs Shaista Bedar (Assistant Librarian, M A Library) also spoke on the occasion.
