28-NOV-2018: Lecture Series on Disability, Higher-Education and Gender in Indian Context Organized by Visually Impaired Teachers of AMU
Aligarh, November 28: To celebrate the International Day of People with disabilities, the visually impaired teachers of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organized a lecture series on the topic "Disability, Higher-Education and Gender in Indian Context". Professor Anil K Aneja (Department of English, University of Delhi (DU)) and Ms Manjula Rath (Assistant Professor of Political Science, Daulat Ram College, DU) were invited to deliver lectures.
Prof Aneja spoke on the topic,'Disability and Higher-Education, an Indian Scenario', extensively on the issues and challenges confront higher-educational institutions in India with regards to disability. He highlighted accessibility in terms of physical, academic and attitudinal barriers challenges. He emphasized that the administration, teachers, staff members and students should work together to create conducive atmosphere for disabled people in the higher-educational level only then enrolment ratio of disabled students can be increased.
Ms Manjula speaking on the topic 'Intersectionality of Disability and Gender in Indian Context', explained the condition of disabled women in India by bringing out her own experience of working at grassroots' level. She added, the disabled women are neglected and lack of special schools for girls with disabilities is making situation worse.
While chairing the session Prof Seemin Hasan (Department of English, AMU), traced the origin of Disability Studies by grounding it in the commonly conceived idea of "Perfection" and said that it is a problematic concept which does not include disabled people.
The session began with the welcome address from Dr Boopathi P (Assistant Professor, Department of English, AMU), who provided the context for organizing lectures on the mentioned topic and highlighted the need for more deliberation on higher-education of the disabled and women with disabilities at university level.
Dr Yogesh K Yadav (Assistant Professor, Department of History), proposed the vote of thanks and Ms Muneeba Anis (Research Scholar, Department of English), conducted the session.
