12-MAR-2019: Prof Purushottam Agrawal delivers first 'Professor Mushirul Hasan Memorial Lecture'
Aligarh, March 12: "The nature of Mahatma Gandhi's modernity is vernacular and it takes in the cultural dynamics of India, its diversity and plurality," said Professor Purushottam Agrawal (Jawaharlal Nehru University) while delivering the first 'Professor Mushirul Hasan Memorial Lecture' on 'Gandhi Today' at the Centre of Advanced Studies (CAS), Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University.
He added that Gandhiji stood for an inclusive Indian culture and fought for the equal rights of all Indians.
Prof Purushottam pointed out that we need to reflect the significance of Gandhi in the present times.
He emphasised that the even though Gandhiji's methods were considered traditional, his life and career was about standing against the established traditions of the time.
"Gandhiji stood against untouchability and contested the idea of women being relegated to the realm of their home," said Prof Purushottam.
Chairing the session, Public Intellectual and eminent historian of ancient and medieval India, Emeritus Professor Irfan Habib said that Gandhian concept of a Nation was essentially humanistic.
Prof Ali Nadeem Rezavi (Chairman and Coordinator, CAS, Department of History) delivered the introductory remarks in which he spoke on the contributions of Late Prof Mushirul Hasan.
He announced a new award in memory of Prof Mushirul Hasan to a Masters Course student, who scores the highest in Modern Indian History.
Prof Zoya Hasan, wife of late Prof Mushirul Hasan attended the lecture.
Prof Farhat Hasan (Delhi University), Prof Aslam Qadeer, Prof Shireen Moosvi, Prof Muhammad Abid, Prof Abadan Khan Amitava, Prof Ishrat Alam, Prof Jabir Raza, Prof Azra Moosvi and Dr Shivangini Tandon were present on the occasion.
Late Prof Mushirul Hasan obtained his M A from the Aligarh Muslim University in 1969 and later earned a Doctorate (PhD) from the University of Cambridge in 1977. During student life in AMU, Prof Mushirul Hasan was active in student politics and literary and cultural activities. He served as the Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia from 2004 to 2009.
