25-APR-2019: JNMC hosts ICO exam
Aligarh, April 25: Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has become an important medical education hub as ophthalmologists from all over the country appeared for the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) examination held here.
The ICO examinations have been adopted by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK replacing their written examinations for offering membership to ophthalmologists. The exam, held at a JNMC lecture theatre was telecast live to the Edinburgh and Glasgow centres of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Coordinator, ICO exam Dr Abdul Waris (Department of ophthalmology) said that the examination is a boon for doctors intending to get MRCS, FRCS and FICO diplomas in India itself without travelling thousands of miles abroad to obtain the qualifications.
"The candidates to clear four parts of the ICO exam will be awarded the MRCS degree, while clearing three parts of the exam will give them FICO and FRCS qualifications," he said adding that the candidates, who clear three parts of the ICO exam will also be given fellowships of three months to attend advance courses in the UK and other European countries.
He pointed out that since ICO is also currently working with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh to increase access to OSCE/VIVA examinations, JNMC is likely to host more of these examinations.
"JNMC will also host more ICO exams in the coming months of August and September," said Dr Waris.
