16-MAY-2019: Letter from Vice Chancellor
My Dear Students, Faculty and Members of the AMU fraternity,
As I complete two years in the office of the Vice Chancellor of this great Institution on 17 May 2019, I would like to share some highly welcome developments, which will accrue academic excellence and fame to our University.
All along, my efforts have been to resolve issues in a democratic way by having a wide-ranging dialogue with all the stakeholders. As a result, there has been peace and cordiality on the campus. I look forward to your full cooperation in ensuring discipline and law and order. Let us not forget the valuable lesson that in unity lies our strength. It is obligatory on all of us to exercise self-restraint in the larger interest of our institution.
Throughout, my sincere efforts have been to tackle any crisis with tact, without resorting to coerciveness. It goes without saying that the smooth functioning of the University is a team-work. It is heartening that I enjoy the confidence and cooperation of all sections of the University community. We affirm our commitment to secularism, pluralism and peaceful coexistence, with emphasis particularly on gender justice.
Our University has figured among the top national institutions in the ranking conducted by international and national agencies. It is a matter of immense pride that our Faculty of Life Sciences is ranked number one in the country.
Equally delightful it is to report that the MHRD's Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) has recommended the status of "Institute of Eminence" to the Aligarh Muslim University. Under this scheme, the University will receive an amount of Rs. 1000 crores over a period of five years. Final decision will be taken on this, after the Lok Sabha Elections. The UGC has accorded us Grade Two autonomy, which spells out numerous opportunities for us. I am sure the AMU community will derive maximum benefits from this opportunity.
We have received the sanction of teaching positions for the Colleges of Nursing and of Para Medical College. The construction of the new building of these two Colleges is on the anvil.
You will be happy to learn that the new complex of the A.K. Tibbiya College Dawakhana has been operationalized. We have managed to get CCRUM Complex vacated, which will provide new facilities for our Tibbiya College and Hospital.
In the JNMCH, for the "Maternal and Child Health Wing", the National Health Mission (NHM) has sanctioned Rs. 28 crores.
Construction of the "District Early Intervention Centre" (DEIC), in the Department of Paediatrics, is in full swing. The NHM has provided Rs 8 crores for this. Centre of Paediatric Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery has been operationalized at the cost of Rs. 16 crores. This is first such grant in Uttar Pradesh.
For providing hostel facility to our girl students, we have recently operationalized 1500 bedded Begum Azizun Nisa Hall of residence.
For empowering our girl students, we have submitted an elaborate proposal for a separate, "College of Professional Studies for Women", to the Govt. of India, with the budget estimate of Rs. 140 crore. The sanction of this College will hopefully be a fitting component of our Centenary celebrations in 2020.
We have also constituted a Committee for Centenary Celebration of AMU to be organised in 2020.
The HRD Ministry has sanctioned to our UGC Human Resource Development Centre the prestigious LEAP Training Programme. A batch of 26 senior academicians from all the leading institutions in the country will receive academic leadership training at the Ohio State University, USA and Aligarh Muslim University.
We recently organized the Winter session of the Aligarh Academic Enrichment Programme (AAEP) in which eminent alumni from the USA and UK made presentations for the benefit of our Research Scholars and faculty.
The Civil Engineering Department faculty members have been sanctioned the project for the conservation of Taj Mahal. For discharging our duty to the wider society and for dispensing social justice we have recently implemented 4% reservation in admission and employment for the physically challenged (Differently Able) persons. Our University sent 21 members strong team of doctors in collaboration with RDA for providing medical facilities to the Kumbh Mela pilgrims at Prayag Raj.
We have been working constantly for enhancing the capacity of Solar energy plant and Green Campus.
The AMU website is in the process of restructuring.
As a top-ranking academic institution, we keep on introducing new, particularly job-oriented courses. Some of the new courses to be launched in the 2019-2020 academic session, are:
> MBA (Hospital Administration)
> MBA (Islamic Banking and Finance)
> Four new MD Courses in Tibbiya College
> P. G. Diploma in Muslim Chaplaincy
> Conversion of Diploma seats into MD, MS in Anaesthesiology, Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Radio
Diagnosis and Ophthalmology.
It is my great pleasure to report that recently 64 classrooms have been converted into Smart Classrooms. This will go a long way in imparting better learning and teaching. We have received and utilized a special UGC grant of Rs. 19 crores for augmenting equipments and campus development.
We have always taken pride in our robust sports activities. Our boys and girls have brought laurels to AMU over the years. We have enhanced the sports activities on the campus. Two new synthetic Tennis Courts and one synthetic Basket Ball Court are being constructed. The new state-of-art equipments have been procured for the University Gymnasium.
Renovation and up-gradation of facilities in the Reading Rooms and Kitchens of the Halls of residences are underway.
Likewise, we have enhanced resources and strategies for upgrading our School infrastructure. The construction of new classrooms and labs in various AMU schools has been going on.
We are concerned about the preservation and renovation of our heritage buildings especially Sir Syed Hall. Various steps have been taken in this direction.
To enhance AMU's global standing, besides others, we have recently signed MoUs with world-class universities and institutes of higher learning, including the Brooklyn College (New York), University Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (Brunei), International Islamic University (Malaysia), Massachusetts General Hospital (Somerville, USA), National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), etc.
Let all of us strive for making our institution a truly top class University in the country.
I look forward to your continued support and cooperation.
