08-JUN-2019: PhD degree awarded on esophageal cancer
Aligarh, June 8: Prof Mohammad Habib Raza, a Professor in the Department of Surgery, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University was awarded PhD in Surgery. This is the first PhD by a working faculty member and the second in the department of Surgery.
The topic of the thesis was "Correlation between p53 gene polymorphism and H pylori infection in endoscopic biopsies of suspected cases of esophageal cancer".
Dr Raza?s research focuses on the causative factors of the deadly disease, 'esophageal cancer', and observes that people suffering with it die within one year of diagnosis even with treatment.
Aligarh city is prone to esophageal cancer as most of the risk factors, including smoking, alcoholism, poor diet, lower socio-economic conditions, environmental pollutants due to lock industry and Narora atomic power plant and Mathura oil refinery being located within 100 km of this city, play a crucial role in its spread and many patients come to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital for treatment from these areas.
Prof Raza's work brought to light that Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria which thrives in poor hygienic conditions, is one of the important causes of esophageal cancer. The bacteria, also present in US and western countries, has been found to be protective against esophageal cancer. However, in the present study it is held that H-pylori is also a risk factor in esophageal cancer like in cases of gastric cancer.
Prof Raza has advised that patients who test positive for H pylori should be given eradication therapy by specific antibiotics and should have long term follow up.
The viva-voce was conducted by two external examiners in the presence of Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof S C Sharma, Chairman, Prof Syed Amjad Ali Rizvi and distinguished faculty members from different departments of the University.
