15-JUN-2019: AMU begins week-long Yoga Day celebrations
Aligarh, June 15: Over 150 yoga enthusiasts from various schools, colleges and institutes from all over Aligarh gathered to flex their body, stretching and breathing mindfully at the department of physical education, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), kick-starting a host of events planned this week to mark the fifth International Day of Yoga.
The Yoga Workshop organised by the department of Physical education at 6:00 am today was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor M H Beg who also joined the participants to perform various Asanas (poses) in a mass yoga session conducted with the help of demonstrators and teachers.
Motivating the students, the Pro Vice Chancellor said, Yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being and a wider dissemination of information on the benefits of yoga would be beneficial for both physical and mental health.
Prof Akbar Husain, Dean, faculty of social sciences pointed out that Yoga gives calmness, peace, confidence and courage to people through which they can do several activities in a better way.
Welcoming the guests, Prof Zameerullah Khan, chairperson, department of Physical education noted, "Yoga is a precious gift given by Indian sages to humanity and it should be practiced regularly for good health and well-being."
Resource person, Dr R B Bhandari (University of Patanjali, Haridwar) spoke on 'Workplace, Wellness and Excellent Work through Yoga'.
Dr Naushad Ansari (Coordinator of the workshop) delineated importance of various Yoga Asanas.
Prof Ikram Hussain, Prof Brij Bhushan Singh, Dr Merajuddin Faridi are coordinating the series of lectures on Yoga lined up for the week-long celebrations.
Dr Sayed Khurram Nisar and Mr Fuzail Ahmad helped organising the event.
