18-JUN-2019: AMU faculty members receive 'Best Paper Award' in USA
Aligarh, June 18: Two faculty members of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Prof Nizamuddin Khan (Department of Geography) and Prof Iftekhar Ahemed (Department of Political Science) have received the 'Best Paper Award' for a research paper they co-authored, titled, 'Geopolitics in Indian Ocean and Threat to Peace in Asia' at the International Conference on Geography Geoinformatics and Geographic Information Science held at Greensboro, North Carolina, USA.
In the paper, they pointed out that the Indian Ocean is a marine highway for trade connecting Africa and Europe with the Far-East Asia with more than 80 percent of oil trade from the Middle-East passing through this ocean.
"Important points like Harmuz, Bab el Mandeb and Malleca have played important geopolitical and economic roles in the strategic relations of countries connected with the Indian Ocean," said Prof Nizamuddin and Prof Iftekhar.
They delineated how revitalization of Silk Road and development of Marine Silk Road and has created competition and tension between countries.
The historical, economical and political significance of the Indian Ocean and its strategic relevance is discussed in the context of the involvement of external powers in the region, presence of nuclear powers and major threats in Indian Ocean rim countries.
