18-JUN-2019: AMU Yoga Day celebrations: Women's College starts workshop
Aligarh, June 18: As a part of a week-long yoga day celebration at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to mark the International Day of Yoga, the Women's College kick-started a Yoga Workshop which will culminate on June 21.
Attending the inaugural function as the Chief Guest, renowned paediatrician, Dr Hameeda Tariq said, "Yoga is deeply rooted in the culture and heritage of India and it ensues a healthy life as the different Asanas (Yoga postures) purify the nervous system keeping the body healthy and strong."
The resource person of the programme, Prof Rajendra Singh (Former, chairman, dept of physical education) pointed out, Yoga increases flexibility and muscle strength, improves respiration, energy and vitality and maintains a balanced metabolism; while a dull body leads to diseases.
"Yoga helps a person manage stress and is very effective in developing coping skills and reaching a positive outlook on life," said Prof Naima Gulrez (Principal, Women's College).
Dr Razia Rizvi (Workshop coordinator) and Ms Nazia Khan (Deputy Workshop coordinator) assisted Prof Rajendra Singh in demonstrating Yoga Asanas to participants.
Ms Madiha Noman conducted the programme and proposed the vote of thanks.
Meanwhile, Prof Mahboob Hasan (MIC Guest House), who was the Chief Guest at the fourth day of the week-long Yoga Day celebrations at the department of physical education said: "Yoga originated in India in ancient times when people used to meditate for body and mind transformation."
The Guest of Honour, Dr Jameel Ahmad (Associate MIC, Guest House) elaborated: "Yoga is a part of India's ancient tradition and the present generation should join hands to carry it forward, it symbolises unity of mind and body; harmony between humans and nature and is a holistic approach to health and well-being."
"More than 170 countries celebrate the International Day of Yoga by organising Yoga training campus, competitions and other activities to raise awareness about Yoga benefits," emphasised Prof Zamirullah Khan (Chairperson, department of physical education and workshop director).
Dr Naushad W Ansari (Workshop coordinator) briefed participants on the importance of Yoga Day.
