ALIGARH August 5: Professor M Athar Ansari, Department of Community Medicine, J N Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University delivered a keynote lecture on 'Lesson learnt from nuclear disasters: Health hazards and its prevention' in the international conference on Emergency Medicine and Critical Care held in Rome, Italy.
Prof Ansari, also a member of the organizing committee of the conference, said that a number of nuclear disasters have occurred in the world including the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing, Chernobyl disaster, Fukushima tragedy and New Delhi incident. People exposed to nuclear radiation from head to toes are worst affected and they may have hair loss in clumps, damage to nerve cells leading to seizures, thyroid carcinoma, increased long term risk for leukaemia, lymphoma, sterility, and radiation burn, he added.
Prof Ansari suggested that best prevention from radiation sickness is to minimize the chances of exposure. This can be achieved by increasing the distance from the radiation source and early evacuation. He stressed the need to strictly following the regulations pertaining to the production, transport, handling and storage of radioactive substances. In case of nuclear fallout, he emphasized, one should stay in houses or shelters provided by the authorities.
More than 30 participants from different parts of the world attended the conference. He also chaired a scientific session. Prof Ansari also chaired a session in the conference.
