10-AUG-2019: Department of Amraz-e-Niswan-wa-Atfal observes World Breastfeeding Week
Aligarh, August 10: Department of Amraz-e-Niswan-wa-Atfal, Faculty of Unani Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University observed the World Breastfeeding Week (August 1 to 7) to raise awareness on innumerable benefits of breast feeding infants.
Prof Syeda Aamena Naaz, Chairperson, Department of Amraz-e-Niswan-wa-Atfal said, "Babies should be breastfed in the first hour after birth as mother's first milk is the optimal nutrient and the first vaccine for them."
"Breastfeeding helps infants with sensory and cognitive development and protects them against diseases," she said adding that breastfeeding reduces infant mortality by allowing quicker recovery from illnesses like diarrhoea and pneumonia.
Prof Naaz with faculty members, Dr Suboohi Mustafa, Dr Diwan Israr Khan, Dr M Anas, Dr Fahmeeda Zeenat and Dr Abiha ahmad Khan explained women under antenatal care and nursing mothers, the importance of breast feeding babies for the first six months after their birth.
Pamphlets on the growth and development of children were also distributed.
