05-SEP-2019: Justice Balakrishnan delivers lecture on social change
ALIGARH September 5: "Directive principles of state policy are foundation of social change and the process of bringing social justice can be strengthened by ensuring the adoption of these principles", said Justice K G Balakrishnan, former Chief Justice of India while delivering a special lecture on "Law as a medium of social change", at the Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University.
Justice Balakrishnan pointed out that the Supreme Court, through its various judgments, has strengthened the idea of social justice and ensured restoration of fundamental rights to the marginalized people. He said that Government of India's initiative to provide mid-day meal to children in schools has helped curbing the dropout rate. He reiterated that social change can be brought into society by ensuring the effective enforcement of laws.
Earlier, Professor Shakeel Samdani, Dean, Faculty of Law, introduced the guest speaker and thanked him for delivering the lecture for the benefits of law students. Advocate Shariq Abbasi highlighted the achievements of Justice Balakrishnan, mentioning that his decision to make mid-day meal compulsory in schools will go a long way in bringing positive change in society.
Justice Balakrishnan, who has written the foreword of Professor Zafar Mahfooz Nomani's book, "Intellectual Property Rights and Public Policy", released the book on this occasion.
Mr Adnan Zaidi conducted the programme while Prof Javaid Talib, Chairman, Department of Law proposed a vote of thanks.
