23-SEP-2019: Dept of Civil Engineering concludes two-day workshop
Aligarh, September 23: The two-day workshop on 'Seismic Safety of Structures' organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) concluded with useful deliberations on structural design principles and quality of construction for seismic resilience of the built environment.
Resource persons, Professor Emeritus T K Datta, IIT-Delhi; Professor Yogendra Singh, IIT-Roorkee; Prof Chandan Ghosh, IIT-Jammu and AMU faculty members delineated various earthquake engineering problems and their solutions, while urging the participants to create action plans and to set goals for applying what they have learned during the workshop.
Speaking on earthquake resistant technologies in India, Prof T K Datta discussed the best ways of renovation, retrofitting and refurbishment of existing buildings.
He emphasised the seismic performance assessment of built-infrastructures across the Country and appealed for suitable human resources in the civil engineering discipline.
Professor Yogendra Singh spoke on new construction techniques and the need to develop understanding of the seismic forces and the building response to decrease earthquake vulnerability.
He stressed the use of Performance-Based-Design-Methodology to ensure that structures remain safe and functional even after disasters.
Prof Chandan Ghosh said that use of dampers, base isolators, and cross bracing can avoid soft storey collapse.
Prof Ghosh gave examples of site specific geotechnical investigations that often mislead engineers in the earthquake prone areas of the country. He also spoke about soil behaviour during earthquake liquefaction that gripped the country during Kangra in 1905, Bihar-Nepal in 1934 and Assam in 1950.
The workshop was inaugurated with AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor as the Chief Guest and Prof Badrul Hasan Khan, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology and Prof M M Sufyan Beg, Principal, Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology as the Guests of Honour.
Prof Mohd Muzzammil, Chairman, Department of Civil Engineering delivered the welcome address. Prof Abdul Baqi, Workshop Convener, briefed participants about the programme, while Prof Rehan A Khan, Workshop Organizing Secretary extended the vote of thanks.
Mr Moinul Haq conducted the programme.
