23-SEP-2019: Women's College begins 'Sir Syed Day Open District Sports Week'
Aligarh, September 23: Balloons were unleashed into the sky by renowned paediatrician, Dr Hameeda Tariq to declare open the 'Sir Syed Day Open District Sports Week' at the Women's College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in which teams comprising girl students from the University and all over the city are participating in volley ball, basket ball, table tennis and badminton events.
On the occasion, the Chief Guest, Dr Hameeda remarked that it is an interesting time in the country as Indian female athletes are making the country proud by winning multiple accolades.
"Sports help us lead a healthy life and teach us team spirit, to play honestly, win honorably, loose gracefully and respect authority," she said.
Dr Hameeda added that participation is more important than winning. "If you keep participating in different competitions then one day you will get the result of your hard work," she emphasised.
Speaking on the health benefits of sports, Prof Naima Gulrez, Principal, Women's College pointed out that the habit of a well-structured sports activity makes people reach their fitness goals, teaches teamwork and problem-solving skills, boosts self-esteem and reduces pressure and stress levels.
She thanked the AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor for providing the Women's College with a new basket ball court and other state-of-art sports facilities.
Ms Nazia Khan, In-charge, Physical Education Section, Women's College proposed the vote of thanks.
During the sports week, eight volley ball teams, 11teams of basket ball and 11 table tennis teams will participate; while in two different formats of badminton events, 11 singles teams and ten teams of doubles are participating.
