30-SEP-2019: AMU concludes National workshop on Tourism
Aligarh, September 30: The week-long workshop on 'Skill Trends and Skill Needs in Tourism Sector in India' organised by the Department of Commerce, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) concluded with valedictory ceremony.
The workshop was sponsored by Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
Presiding over the ceremony held at HRDC auditorium, Prof Akhtar Haseeb, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, AMU, said tourism sector contributes immensely to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country, and students have a lot of potential in this sector provided they are equipped with appropriate skills. Travel has been one of the passions of the mankind since ages, people travel for religious purposes, and they visit new places in search of knowledge, and to know about the other part of the world or just for recreation.
Prof Haseeb exhorted the students to work passionately for learning new things. He said 'fix your target and work hard to reach there.'
Renowned pediatrician, and Guest of Honour, Dr Hameeda Tariq congratulated the department of Commerce for organising the workshop. She said 'Incredible India' has diverse culture and every part of it is beautiful, which attracts domestic as well as foreign tourists in large numbers.
'Medical tourism is an important dimension of our potential that needs to be tapped, as the cost of treatment is moderate here in comparison to USA & Europe' she said.
Asserting that women workforce is crucial to the tourism sector, Dr Hameeda Tariq said 'still they are underpaid and underutilized'. She said that in Kashmir, which is one of the most attractive destinations for tourists, women are the backbone of the business and tourism.
Chief Guest of function, AMU Registrar, Mr Abdul Hamid (IPS) highlighted the skills needed for those aiming to work in the 'dynamic industry of tourism'. Recalling his posting as an IPS officer in Agra city, he said that providing an atmosphere of peace and order was of utmost importance as the city is the prime tourist spot. He further emphasized about the market needs, grooming, knowledge of the language and other generic and specialized skills of the sector.
Prof S M Imamul Haque (Dean, Faculty of Commerce), Prof Nawab Ali Khan, (Chairman, Department of Commerce), and Prof Sheeba Hamid, (Coordinator, MTTM Program, Department of Commerce) also spoke on the occasion. Dr Nayyer Rahman conducted the program.
