10-OCT-2019: DLW and NER: Champions of 59th UP State Senior Basketball Championship
Aligarh, October 10: DLW (Diesel Locomotive Works, Banaras) and NER (North Eastern Railway) Gorakhpur won the 59th Uttar Pradesh State Senior Basketball championship for men and women. It was jointly organised by the AMU Games Committee and Aligarh District Basketball Association that concluded here recently.
DLW defeated Meerut 77-76, where DLW?s Askash Bhasin was the top scorer with 20 points and Vishal Kumar of Meerut scored 13 points. On the other side Women's Championship was won by NER (Northern Eastern Railways) who defeated Meerut 73-33. NER?s Smarjeet Kaur scored 14 points and Sharya Sharma of Meerut scored 10 points for their team respectively.
"AMU has a proud history in sports; the role models likes of Ghouse Mohammad (Tennis), Lal Amarnath, from Zafar Iqbal to Joginder Singh, the list of Olympic hockey players and others is endless to be inspiration for budding sportsperson from the campus and to promote basketball, NBA superstars are also coming to India. This 59th UP championship is a major event and it has promoted basketball significantly", said Mr Alok Sharma (IPS, ADG) while delivering presidential remark.
Chief Guest Dr Preetinder Singh (IPS, DIG Aligarh), said that many individuals sport is more than just a social activity or a way to stay healthy-it is a way of life. Globalisation is quickly changing the way that sport is viewed within society but to many students the intrinsic value is still very evident.
The alumna of the AMU, Mrs Seema Sharma (President of Uttar Pradesh Basketball Association), congratulated university Games Committee and ADBA for jointly hosting the state level championship.
The Registrar of AMU, Mr Abdul Hamid (IPS), gave trophies to the winning team.
Prof S Amjad A Rizvi, Secretary, University Games Committee in his welcome address complimented Dr Jameel as one man army, and said that sports denote team work, which can also be greatly applied to other areas.
Dr Jameel Ahmad, President, Gymkhana Club extended the vote of thanks and acknowledged the efforts of UPBA and his team for the success of the championship.
Mr RS Bedi (Selector UPBA) also spoke. Many officials from UPBA and ADBA were present along with Provosts, Deans, Chairpersons, teaching, non teaching staff, students and players on the occasion. The Program was conducted by Miss Madiha Noman.
