13-OCT-2019: Anti Polythene Drive: AMU distributes Cloth Bags
Aligarh, October 13: The Department of Linguistics, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organized an anti-polythene campaign at Firdous Nagar in Aligarh. Cloth bags with message of save the environment were distributed among the local residents for creating awareness among them to shun plastic bags.
The program was organized in association with NGO Ummeed.
The campaign is the sequence of the several other events organized by the Department of Linguistics to mark the government of India's initiative of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.
Special guest on the occasion Mr Abdul Hamid (IPS), Registrar AMU, distributed the cloth bags among the children and residents. He stressed on collective responsibility to protect the environment for future generations. Mr Hamid said, "With climate change and environmental pollution becoming global concern, plastic pollution and plastic waste management is also major source of worry."
Speaking on the occasion, Prof S Imtiyaz Hasnain , Department of Linguistics said, "Millions of tons of plastic are being produced every year, which is not biodegradable , hence, the countries across the globe are adopting and implementing strategies aimed at eliminating the use of single-use plastic".
Chairman, Department of Linguistics, Prof Jahangeer Warsi elaborated that most of the plastic is not biodegradable and over a period of time the plastic breaks up and releases toxic chemicals into the water bodies, which in turn make their way into food and water supplies.
On the occasion teachers, staffs, volunteers from the NGO and students were also present.
