14-OCT-2019: Lecture on 'Arts, Medicine and Sculpture' held at Dept of Pharmacology
Aligarh, October 14: A lecture on 'Arts, Medicine and Sculpture' by Prof Michael Benevenia, a visiting Fullbright Scholar from United States of America throwing light on the genre of medical sculpture took place at the Department of Pharmacology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
Prof Benevenia discussed how the process of researching medicine and prosthetics history led him to story of Vishpala's leg in the Rig Veda and eventually to various traditional Indian medicine systems including the Unani Medicine, which he pursues with great interest.
He pointed out that his interest in medicine began with the regular visits of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Maryland, USA.
"It was in this Museum that I started seeing the Civil War medicine in metaphorical sense and drew inspiration to create artwork about empathy," said Prof Benevenia, who also shared his artworks on medicine during the programme.
Presiding over the lecture, Dr Shafiqur Rehman, Shere Kashmir University of Agricultural Science, Srinagar spoke about the importance of arts in medicine.
Prof Mohammad Nasiruddin, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, welcomed the guests and also proposed the vote of thanks.
Prof Syed Ziaur Rahman conducted the programme.
