21-OCT-2019: UP Wildlife department invites AMU scholars
ALIGARH October 21: Research scholars in the Department of Wildlife Sciences, Aligarh Muslim University will now share their expertise with state?s wildlife department. They will be instrumental for conservation of wildlife in Uttar Pradesh.
Uttar Pradesh's Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Mr Sunil Pandey while speaking at the inaugural function of 3 day international conservation conference at JNMC auditorium said, "We have already written to AMU for sending their JRF/SRF to us. We can use their expertise in wildlife conservation."
The 3 day international conservation conference is being organized jointly by Department of Wildlife Sciences, AMU and Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun.
"We are already using technology for conservation of wildlife. For this IIT-Kanpur and DRDO have helped us. We have Vertical Take off Landing instrument for surveys of area which can also be use tranquilising animals safely. We have Aerostat, a helium filled balloon for surveying the forest. For the technological aspect we need experts and in this area AMU can help us by providing the expertise," he said.
Mr Pandey stated that conservation of wildlife involves emotional aspect also as one should remember that animals are also living beings who cannot speak.
Earlier presiding over the function, Pro Vice Chancellor, AMU Prof Akhtar Haseeb said, "Wildlife conservation should be taken in a holistic way. It involves several aspects. Due to rapid industrialization, urbanization conservation has become an uphill task." He also stated that several animal, insects and even medicinal plants have become endangered species. He urged the young researchers to focus on multidisciplinary research work for better results.
Additional Director, Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, Dr G S Rawat in his message stated, "An international panel of experts from various parts of the globe, under the aegis of Intergovernmental Science-Policy platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has recently underscored the urgent need for transformational change to safeguard life on Earth. Efforts are needed to bridge the gaps between academic research and conservation in practice so that society at large comes to consensus of living in harmony with nature."
Earlier, Prof Wazahat Husain for his exemplary services was conferred lifetime achievement award jointly by AMU and WII. Prof Husain has been rendering selfless services to the department for past two decades.
Conference Coordinator Dr Orus Ilyas apprised the audience about the plenary sessions of the conference. Conference Director, Prof Afifullah Khan welcomed the guests.
The inaugural session of the conference was also addressed by Dr William McShea from Smithsonian Institute, USA and Prof Qayyum Husain, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences.
The conference will hold plenary session for coming two days.
