23-OCT-2019: As a young boy, all I wanted to do was draw; says Sudheer Nath at workshop inaugural
Aligarh, October 23: "As a young boy growing up in a small village in Kerala, all I wanted to do was draw," said renowned satire activist and cartoonist, Mr Sudheer Nath at the Moinuddin Art Gallery of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
He was delivering the keynote address at the inaugural function of the 'National Cartoon Workshop' and 'Hasyachithrasatakam', an Expo of Gandhi cartoons to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The three day workshop and the exhibition is being jointly organised by the Malayalam Sargavedi, the literary and research forum of the Malayalam section of the Department of Modern Indian Languages and the Moinuddin Art Gallery.
Speaking on how his obsession to draw increased, Mr Sudheer Nath said that famous cartoonist Yesudasan, mentored him in the basics of political cartooning.
"After working as the Editorial Cartoonist of the Malayalam daily, Thejas, I began to draw for English publications and it was in 1989 that I became a member of Kerala Cartoon Academy," he said adding that he began learning more about cartoons from Academy members.
Talking on 100 years of Malayalam cartoon, Mr Sudheer Nath said that Kerala has produced several great cartoonists and it is the duty of stalwarts to mentor the young to ensure that this unique art form reaches the next generation.
"There are any number of talented cartoonists all over the country with great political awareness, satirical skills and original draftsmanship," pointed out Mr Sudheer Nath.
In the unique 'hands on' workshop, Mr Sudheer Nath will provide the participants with the training on the basics of cartooning, including techniques and tips on how to draw like a professional.
Prof Anwar Jahan Zuberi, (former Vice Chancellor, Calicut University) inaugurated the workshop, while Prof Masood Anwar Alavi (Dean, Faculty of Arts) delivered the presidential address.
Prof Badar Jahan (Coordinator, Moinuddin Art Gallery) gave the welcome address.
Eminent cartoonist, E Suresh of the Victor Channel Kerala was also present on the occasion.
Prof T N Satheesan extended the vote of thanks.
A documentary on the history of cartoon drawing was also screened on the inaugural day.
