25-JAN-2020: AMU observes Voters Day
Aligarh, January 25: The Administrative Block, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) today observed the 'Voters Day' to mark the foundation day of Election Commission of India (ECI) with a pledge to participate ethically in elections.
Administrating the pledge to Administrative Block staff, Mr Minhaj Ahmad Khan, Joint Registrar said: "We, the Citizens of India, having abiding faith in democracy, hereby pledge to uphold the democratic traditions of our country and the dignity of free, fair and peaceful elections, and to vote in every election fearlessly and without being influenced by considerations of religion, race, caste, community, language or any other inducement."
Addressing at the Centre of Continuing and Adult Education and Extension (CCAEE), Prof Mohammad Gulrez, Director, CCAEE said, 'Voters' Day 2020' marks an important milestone in the history of Indian democracy as the Election Commission of India completes 70 years of its existence.
Prof Aysha Munira Rasheed, Deputy Director, CCAEE spoke on the importance of Constitution.
Prof Gulrez, Prof Munira and Dr Shamim Akhtar also read the Voters' Day pledge. Ms Musharraf Jahan extended the vote of thanks.
During the celebrations at the Department of Linguistics, Prof M J Warsi (Chairman) administered the oath in a function attended by faculty members and non-teaching staff. Prof Warsi urged everyone to exercise the right to vote and laid emphasis on encouraging, facilitating and maximising the enrolment, especially for the new or first time voters.
The Department of Physics organised organised slogan writing, essay writing and debate competitions on the theme ?Electoral Literacy for Stronger Democracy? to mark the occasion. Prof B P Singh (Chairperson) discussed the importance of the Voters? Day and how it should be utilised for promoting informed participation in the electoral process. Meanwhile, Dr Jai Prakash read the pledge.
Prof Rubi Anjum, Chairperson, Department of Tahaffuzi Wa Samaji Tib administered the oath at her department in a function, which was attended by teachers and non-teaching staff. MD students and scholars participated in an essay writing competition on the occasion.
At the Women's College, Prof Naima Khatoon (Principal) pledged with teachers and non-teaching staff to vote in every election. She also spoke on the importance of the Voters' Day.
The Department of Community Medicine, J N Medical College observed the day with the reading of voters' pledge at the Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC), Jawan and Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC), Qila Road. Dr Uzma Eram and Dr Tabassum Nawab read the pledge at RHTC, while Dr Ali Jafar Abedi and Dr Suboohi Afzal administered the oath at UHTC. Prof Anees Ahmad (Chairman) delineated the importance of the occasion.
Delivering address on Voters' Day, Prof Mohd Shakeel Ahmad Samdani (Dean, Faculty of Law) said that the Voters' Day is celebrated to aware people of their voting rights and make more people contribute to the electoral political process in the country, mostly the newly eligible generation. Meanwhile, Prof Javaid Talib, Chairman, Department of Law administered the pledge.
During observations at the Department of Physical Education, Prof Zamirullah Khan (Chairman) read the pledge to teachers, students and non-teaching staff. He elaborated how electoral literacy is imperative for a stronger democracy.
The Voters' Day was celebrated at the Aftab Hall with the reading of pledge by Mr Salman Khalil (Provost). All hall wardens and staff members of the hall attend the function.
At the Abdullah Hall, Dr Ghazala Naheed (Provost) administered the oath to students and employees. She also urged them actively participate in the elections by casting their votes.
