15-FEB-2020: Conference on 'Emerging Trends in Chemical Sciences' begins in AMU
Aligarh, February 15: Two day National Conference on 'Emerging Trends in Chemical Sciences' organized by Department of Chemistry, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) began on Saturday.
Organising Secretary Prof Farukh Arjamand informed that the conference is being organized in collaboration with DRS-II (SAP), DST (FIST and PURSE) will highlight wide range of fundamental and applied research in the chemical sciences and interdisciplinary subjects.
Speaking at the inaugural function, AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Akhtar Haseeb said, "Department of Chemistry has a long legacy of contributions in research. It is one of the oldest departments of the University and has produced great teachers and researchers, who have brought laurels to AMU and the Country".
"It is a basic science, which influences many areas as it impacts everything. If you look around, everything around you is chemistry", he added.
Chief Guest, Prof Sahar I Mostafa, Department of Chemistry, Mansoura University, Egypt highlighted the trends in chemical sciences. "Chemists have a major role to play in ensuring a continued supply of the fertilizer, medicines and other chemicals needed to support the world's population. It is also their responsibility to design processes that reduce or eliminate the production of unwanted or hazardous chemicals that can potentially damage the environment," she said.
Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof Qazi Mazhar Ali, highlighted the history of the Department of Chemistry. "The Department of Chemistry, established in 1911, is one of the oldest departments in the University and it has produced a number of students who are working with public and private sector companies of national and international repute," he said.
Attending the function as the Guest of Honour, Prof Tarashankar Pal from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur stated that the world-class research in chemistry and other allied branches like bio-chemistry carried in AMU has impressed the top most institutes in the Country.
Also speaking on the occasion, Guest of Honour, Prof Mahammad Ali, Vice Chancellor, Aliah University elaborated on 'Design and Synthesis of Meolecular Probes for Real-Time Monitoring of Nitric Oxide with Bio-Imaging Applications.'
Prof Mohammad Shakir, Corrdinator, DRS II, said that this is fifth conference in the series under the DRS-II (SAP), DST (FIST and PURSE). Delivering the welcome address, Prof Sartaj Tabassum, Chairman, Department of Chemistry said that the conference aims to provide opportunities to exchange ideas, to establish research relations and to find international partners for future collaboration.
A book of abstracts was also released on the occasion.
