02-MAY-2020: Online faculty development programme concludes
ALIGARH May 2: As the COVID-19 Pandemic and the successive lock downs the world over compelled the educators and the higher educational institutions to find out the alternative mode of teaching and learning using internet-based educational tools, the Aligarh Muslim University explored the opportunity to provide online tutorial and assignment based learning facilities to its faculty and students.
AMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Tariq Mansoor inaugurated a two-day Faculty Development Programme on 'Managing Online Teaching and Research', organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences in collaboration with INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad. Prof JP Singh Joorel (Director, INFLIBNET Centre) addressed the inaugural session through WebEx platform. Prof Akbar Husain, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and the Convener of the FDP welcomed the guests and participants. Around 285 faculty members from different faculties of AMU attended the program.
Eminent experts from different parts of the country and abroad shared their knowledge and provided hands-on training on online learning platforms like Google Classroom, Open Broadcaster Software (OBS), research tools (Mendeley and Microsoft Power BI) and online educational and research resources.
Mr Manoj Kumar K (Senior Scientist, INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad) delivered an informative lecture on Managing Research by E-Resources and gave an overview of the availability of online authentic educational and research resources for researchers. Mr Manoj also briefed the initiatives of INFLIBNET through various projects to accelerate teaching and research.
Prof Naushad Ali PM, Coordinator of the Programme, shared his experience on managing online classes using Google Classroom with hands-on training. His presentation was aimed at helping the faculty members to use LMS platform for managing online classes and publishing course content, collecting and evaluating assignments and conducting tests.
Dr Shah Mohd Khan, Department of Psychology imparted hands-on training on OBS being used for developing and publishing video courseware.
On the second day, Dr Parvez Mahmood Khan, Director, Computer Centre delivered a lecture and hands-on training on managing research using Mendeley Open Source Software. In the second session, Ms Pranjali V Bramhe, Microsoft, A-Z Clouds, Noida demonstrated the important features and applications of Microsoft Power BI software used for visualization of a large quantity of data.
Engaging the course participants in the last session, Mr Nikesh Narayanan, IT Librarian, Zayed University, Dubai (UAE) explained the utility of different online methods and tools for conducting a review of literature, reference management, scholarly publication and research data management.
In the concluding session, an online test was conducted using Google Classroom and participants shared their views in the feedback session. A message of Prof Akbar Husain, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and convener of the FDP was also conveyed to the participants. Dr Pervez Mahmood Khan and Dr S M Khan also spoke on the occasion.
Proposing a vote of thanks, Prof Naushad Ali PM said it was satisfactory to see the overwhelming enthusiasm in participants to learn about modern pedagogical tools including Google Classroom, OBS, Mendeley and Power BI.
